I wish I could get a 1st gen facelift headlights retrofit for my 2005. I really don't dig on the Euro-style taillights for the refresh.

Yeah, the facelift headlights are a big improvement. I actually like the facuft tail lights too, but to each his own.

The first gen face lift is by far the best looking. After that it got kind of ugly in the front, and now I really hate the new design.

I agree. Although, I don't think the second gen looks all that bad. I've seen worse.

After looking above... the tail lights look to be the same shape.

It might be a used-parts purchase away from fitting red tail lights to the face-lifted model.

Yeah but that's too much effort to sell my '05, get an '06 and swap taillights :P

A black grille and a bit of black or body-color vinyl to 'eyebrow' the extra chrome at the top of the headlights on the 2nd gen could be OK.

The rest of the body on the 2nd Gen is kinda serious looking. With the right set of aftermarket wheels, it could resemble the better traits of the H3 Hummer... the one that was less horrible than the ridiculous H2.

I think we can thank Nissan, and the most recent Pathfinder re-design for Honda following suit with something even more boring. Toyota Highlander isn't as ridiculous, but it is still quite beige and boring.

At least Ford Explorer 'looks' a bit more serious than these, even if it is likewise car-based, and the new 2016 grille looks like they are re-visiting the bland-ness of the short-lived Ford Taurus X wagon.

Did they ever fix those transmission issues? Don't get one that has VCM!

You forgot one. The original, and perhaps best, Honda Pilot. Built between 1989 and 1990 this Pilot was an evolution of the Honda Odyssey (notice how they are reusing the names?) which was built from 1977-1989. These off road buggies were unique in the Honda line. My folks had Odyssey's for a while when I was a kid and they were about the coolest things ever.

I worked with someone who went through 5 Pilots in succession, I believe he had 2 of the 1st gen and 3 of the 2nd gen. Then, he moved on to loaded up Big Three pickups because he reached the upper limit of the Pilot's price range and thought the MDX was somehow too small inside.

Out of all of them, I have to go with the Gen 2 model - it manages to look purposeful and truck like enough to lure SUV buyers but still bland enough so as not to alienate Honda's traditional customers. However, it seems like Honda believes they got it right the first time, since the MkIII seems to be going back to more of the MKI's looks.

Has come a long way?? More than the design has gone full circle:

2002 Pilot = Overgrown 2002 CRV

2016 Pilot = Overgrown 2016 CRV
